» Layered evaluation paper in UMUAI December, 2010
This paper has had an improbably long gestation period (first talks about it were in 2001!) and may be of interest to people that are looking for effective ways to evaluate their adaptive system.

Abstract: The evaluation of interactive adaptive systems has long been acknowledged to be a complicated and demanding endeavour. Some promising approaches in the recent past have attempted tackling the problem of evaluating adaptivity by “decomposing” and evaluating it in a “piece-wise” manner. Separating the evaluation of different aspects can help to identify problems in the adaptation process. This paper presents a framework that can be used to guide the “layered” evaluation of adaptive systems, and a set of formative methods that have been tailored or specially developed for the evaluation of adaptivity. The proposed framework unifies previous approaches in the literature and has already been used, in various guises, in recent research work. The presented methods are related to the layers in the framework and the stages in the development lifecycle of interactive systems. The paper also discusses practical issues surrounding the employment of the above, and provides a brief overview of complementary and alternative approaches in the literature.

in conjunction with the 5th International
Conference on Adaptive Hypermedia and Adaptive Web-Based Systems
(AH2008). The workshop was organised by myself and Stephan
Weibelzahl in the context of the "Adaptive
Learning Spaces" project.

The
fifth in the series of workshops "User-Centred Design and Evaluation
of Adaptive Systems" was being organised in the context of the 4th
International Conference on Adaptive Hypermedia and Adaptive Web-Based
Systems (AH2006). This year's workshop coverage was expanded
again, this time to explicitly include user-centred approaches to
the design of adaptive systems (a fact reflected also in the change
of the workshop's title). The workshop was organised by myself, Stephan
Weibelzahl and Judith
Masthoff. The proceedings of
the workshop are now available online from the workshop's

Two
papers on meta-adaptivity / self-regulation have been accepted for
publication in AH2006. Actually, the first of the two papers, accepted
for presentation in the main track of the conference, is a short
version of the second, accepted for publication in the joint A3H
and A3EH workshop.
